Ciro Immobile: Besiktas’ new Mario Gomez

Ciro Immobile, Besiktas’ new star, is being compared to Mario Gomez, former German forward who captured the affection of Besiktas fans.

Besiktas defeated Antalyaspor 4-2 during the second week of the Super Lig. Immobile scored two goals during the match, which had a substantial impact.

Turkish football pundit Tayfun Bayindir recently praised Lazio striker Ciro Immobile on TRT Spor.

“Immobile is a top-tier striker. The Turkish league has not witnessed a penalty area finisher in quite some time. This season is anticipated to be a season of exceptional strikers. The new Mario Gomez of Besiktas has been identified. It is my sincere hope that the situation will not conclude in the same manner,” he said.

After last year’s poor performance, Besiktas supporters appear to be reliving the excitement of their 2015/16 championship season this season.

Many supporters, as Bayindir observed, are of the opinion that Immobile, like Gomez, who made an enduring impression despite his brief tenure, will also deliver impressive and influential performances.

In 41 official matches for Besiktas, Mario Gomez scored 28 goals and provided six assists. Political considerations (specifically, the July 15 coup attempt) and his wife’s unwillingness to reside in Türkiye partially precipitated his departure.  

The German star, affectionately nicknamed “Eysan,” by Besiktas fans, was named after a character from the popular Turkish TV series “Ezel” after he departs from the club.

Another similarity between Gomez and Immobile is that they both joined Besiktas from Italian clubs. Furthermore, Gomez, like Immobile, scored two goals in his inaugural official match at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium. Immobile scored two goals in the Super Cup final as Besiktas beat Galatasaray 5-0.

Golden Boot winner Ciro Immobile has had an impressive debut with Besiktas, scoring four goals in his first three official matches.
