Christoph Daum’s farewell included Turkish songs in honor of his wishes
German football icon Christoph Daum was laid to rest in a ceremony held at Cologne Stadium, where two Turkish songs were played according to his wishes.
Daum, who had been battling lung cancer, passed away on August 24. The memorial took place at the Cologne Stadium, the same place where Daum married his wife Angelica in 2007. Over 5,000 fans and numerous dignitaries attended to bid a final farewell.
The ceremony saw many notable figures from both Turkish and German sports communities. Fenerbahce President Ali Koc offered condolences to Daum’s family, stating, “I wish you patience and strength during this difficult time. He was a great leader and a remarkable person who touched many hearts.”
Besiktas General Secretary Kaan Sakul also gave an emotional speech, saying, “He was an amazing person who touched many hearts both on and off the field. Rest in peace, Mr. Daum. We will miss you but never forget you.”
During the emotional event, an orchestra conducted by Turkish composer Betin Gunes performed “Bir Baskadir Benim Memleketim” and “Samanyolu,” both songs chosen by Daum, highlighting his deep friendship with Türkiye.
Daum, who worked as a coach in Türkiye for many years, coached Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Bursaspor and left a deep mark on Turkish football.
