Ahmet Kirecci, affectionately known as Mersinli, secured a lasting legacy in Turkish sports as the first athlete to win an Olympic medal during the Republic period.
Born 1914 in Mersin, Kirecci’s athletic journey commenced with boxing, briefly exploring athletics before discovering his true calling in wrestling.
Mersin Fire Brigade Commander Memduh Bey played a pivotal role in Kirecci’s success, guiding his talent to flourish in karakucak wrestling competitions in Tarsus.
Recognizing his potential, Memduh Bey facilitated his move to Istanbul, where he joined prestigious clubs such as Kumkapi Wrestling Club and Kasimpasa Sports Club. His national debut occurred at the 1933 Balkan Games in Izmir.
Kirecci’s wrestling prowess in Greco-Roman and freestyle styles brought triumphs in the 1933, 1937, and 1940 Balkan Games. The pinnacle was the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he secured Türkiye’s first bronze medal, followed by a groundbreaking gold at the 1948 London Olympics.
Upon retiring from wrestling in 1949, Kirecci’s legacy continued to endure both in sports and as a guest of Ataturk in Istanbul. His reputation was further solidified when he showcased his skills in a demonstration match with a German wrestler, earning widespread admiration and respect.
