U.S. President Joe Biden announced on social media that the United States will renew its efforts in the coming days to broker a cease-fire in Gaza, emphasizing collaboration with Türkiye, Egypt, Qatar and Israel.

“Over the coming days, the United States will make another push with Türkiye, Egypt, Qatar, Israel and others to achieve a cease-fire in Gaza with the hostages released and an end to the war without Hamas in power,” Biden said.

The initiative follows a year of unsuccessful attempts to mediate peace between Israel and Hamas, except for a brief pause in fighting between Nov. 24 and Nov. 30, 2023, when some hostages were released.

Cease-fire possible with hostage release: Biden

President Biden underlined that Hamas holds the key to de-escalating the conflict. “Now Hamas has a choice to make. Their only way out is to release the hostages, including American citizens, which they hold, and, in the process, bring an end to the fighting.

This would make possible a surge of humanitarian relief,” Biden said in his statement on X, formerly known as Twitter.

National security adviser Jake Sullivan has reinforced a message earlier from U.S. President Joe Biden that the country wishes to make a renewed push to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.

Speaking on MSNBC in the U.S., Sullivan said: “President Biden intends to begin that work today by having his envoys engage with Türkiye, Qatar, Egypt and other actors in the region.”

Hamas also recently expressed its readiness for the Gaza cease-fire following the Lebanon-Israel truce. “We have informed mediators in Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye that Hamas is ready for a cease-fire agreement and a serious deal to exchange prisoners,” the Hamas official said.

‘Türkiye is ready to contribute to Gaza cease-fire’

Earlier, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also said, “Türkiye is ready to contribute in every way to stop the ongoing massacre in Gaza and establish a permanent cease-fire.”

Along with President Erdogan, the Foreign Ministry also underlined that a long-term solution in Gaza is vital for peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

“We take this opportunity to recall that to ensure regional peace and stability, a permanent and comprehensive cease-fire must be declared in Gaza as soon as possible and Israel must cease its aggressive policies,” the Foreign Ministry stated.
