UNIFIL urges calm amid fragile stability

UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti issued a written statement warning that the early morning launch of four rockets from Lebanon into Israel, and Israel’s immediate strikes, could lead to renewed violence in the area.

“Following the launch of four rockets from Lebanon into Israel early this morning and subsequent retaliations, we are concerned about a potential escalation of violence in the area,” Tenenti said.

He called on all parties to remain calm, emphasizing that the region had experienced a return to stability in recent months. “We urge all sides to preserve the stability that has returned to the area in recent months,” he added.

Tenenti also warned of the possible consequences of any escalation: “The situation remains very critical, and we call on all parties to fulfill their responsibilities.” He confirmed that UNIFIL peacekeepers are continuing their duties at their assigned locations.

Israeli strikes leave civilians dead and injured

According to Lebanon’s official news agency NNA, at least two people were killed and 10 others wounded as a result of Israeli artillery and airstrikes targeting towns near the Lebanese-Israeli border.

The report stated that the Israeli military shelled the town of Khiam and launched a series of large-scale air raids across the Nabatieh Governorate. In the town of Toul, a woman and a child were killed, while eight others were wounded.

The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health later confirmed that two additional civilians were injured in the town of Kfar Kila.

Israeli army radio reported that the initial phase of the military operation was limited to targets in the Nabatieh region.

Cease-fire violations continue despite agreement

Despite the cease-fire agreement reached on Nov. 27, 2024, hostilities have continued between the two sides.

According to Lebanese officials, at least 94 people have been killed and 288 injured in Israeli attacks since the agreement was signed.

Israeli ground forces have also entered Lebanese territory during operations and continue to maintain positions on five strategic sites—Hamamis Hill, Aziyye Hill, Uwayda Hill, Balat Mountain, and Labbuneh Hill—despite cease-fire terms requiring their withdrawal.

The Israeli military stated that its air defense system intercepted three rockets launched from Lebanon into northern Israel earlier today.
