UNIFIL maintains positions despite Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon
The U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) confirmed that it will not abandon its positions despite repeated “deliberate” attacks by Israeli forces.
Since Oct. 8, UNIFIL positions in Ras Naqoura, Labbouneh, and Ramia have been directly targeted by Israeli military fire, said Andrea Tenenti, a spokesperson for the peacekeeping force.
“Peacekeepers remain in all positions, and the U.N. flag continues to fly,” Tenenti told Anadolu Agency, adding that the organization will persist in its efforts to carry out its mandate.
Casualties and damage
Israeli forces have launched repeated strikes on southern Lebanon, claiming to target Hezbollah positions. These attacks have killed over 1,500 people and displaced at least 1.34 million, according to Lebanese officials.
UNIFIL has also been caught in the crossfire, with five peacekeepers injured at their headquarters in Naqoura, and another 15 affected by a form of smoke released during attacks in Ramia.
Tenenti reported that an Israeli Merkava tank fire hit an observation tower at their Naqoura headquarters, further raising concerns about peacekeeper safety.
Formal protests to IDF
Tenenti noted that UNIFIL has formally protested the attacks in a letter to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) but has yet to receive an explanation for the targeting of their positions.
“The IDF has not told us why they are attacking our positions, cameras, lighting, and communications equipment,” he said.
Despite the growing threats, Tenenti reaffirmed that UNIFIL is prepared to adjust its operations and has contingency plans in place to address further escalations.
Calls for protection of peacekeepers
The U.N. Security Council reiterated its call for all parties to respect the safety and security of UNIFIL personnel. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a stern warning on Tuesday, stating that attacks on peacekeepers “may constitute a war crime.”
UNIFIL’s operations, which do not have a humanitarian mandate, have been disrupted by the ongoing security challenges. However, the force continues to facilitate aid deliveries and recently oversaw a 22-vehicle convoy delivering essential supplies to villages in southern Lebanon.
