Türkiye is preparing for a maritime jurisdiction agreement with the new administration in Syria, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu said.

Uraloglu confirmed, “We will make a maritime jurisdiction agreement with the Syrian government. We are working on an emergency action plan in Syria, which includes air, rail, road and communication services. We will activate the airports.”

The new Syrian administration in Damascus has signaled strong cooperation with Ankara on both bilateral and multilateral issues.

Türkiye is expected to play a significant role in Syria’s reconstruction including infrastructure projects.

The 13-year war in Syria has caused widespread destruction to the country’s infrastructure, with some estimates suggesting the economy has collapsed by 85%.

New post-Assad opportunities

After the fall of Bashar al-Assad and his Baath regime on Dec. 8, the main Syrian opposition Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) established a temporary government until March 2025.

Since then, Ankara has reopened its embassy and Turkish Red Crescent offices, with both the chief of intelligence and the foreign minister visiting Damascus.
