Turkish intelligence eliminates senior PKK/YPG figure in Syria
Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) has eliminated a so-called senior member of the PKK/YPG terrorist group in Syria, according to security sources on Wednesday.
Senior PKK/YPG terrorist targeted in Syria
Shiraz Omer, codenamed Sozdar Afrin, was located through intelligence operations, sources said. The MIT closely monitored Omer, a high-ranking figure within the financial structure of the group, before executing a precise operation on the Rmelan-Malikiyah road in Syria.
According to the sources, Omer had been on MIT’s target list and was tracked before the operation was carried out under optimal conditions.
Background on Shiraz Omer
Omer joined the terrorist group in 2012. After operating in Iraq’s Qandil region for some time, he returned to Syria, where he held leadership positions in Ayn al-Arab, Hassakeh, and Malikiyah.
At one point, Omer served as the spokesperson for the PKK/YPJ, the group’s female unit, before moving into financial management within the organization.
Türkiye’s stance on PKK/YPG
The PKK, which has led a four-decade insurgency against Türkiye, is designated as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union. It has been responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women and children. The YPG is regarded as the PKK’s Syrian offshoot by Türkiye.
