Trump’s Gaza displacement plan ‘unacceptable’: FM Fidan
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has strongly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to displace Palestinians from Gaza, calling the idea “unacceptable” and stating that even discussing such a plan is wrong.
Speaking at the Anadolu Agency’s Editors’ Desk in Ankara, Fidan reaffirmed Türkiye’s opposition to any initiative that seeks to remove the Palestinian population from Gaza, emphasizing Türkiye’s commitment to Palestinian rights.
Türkiye’s opposition to forced displacement
Fidan warned that the world is shifting toward a “law of the jungle,” where power dictates outcomes without consideration for human rights. He underscored Palestinians must remain a central part of any regional solution.
“We oppose all initiatives that aim to exclude the people of Gaza from the equation. Even bringing such an idea to the table is unacceptable,” Fidan asserted.
Trump’s remarks came during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington, where he suggested Palestinians should be relocated to Jordan and Egypt. His proposal has been firmly rejected by both Amman and Cairo.
Trump’s proposal sparks controversy
Trump claimed that the United States would take over Gaza, remove unexploded ordnance, and develop the area economically. However, he did not provide details on how over two million Palestinians would be displaced or where they would be resettled.
“The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it. We’ll own it,” Trump said.
He suggested turning Gaza into “the Riviera of the Middle East,” stating that his plan had received praise from high-level leaders in the region.
Trump’s proposal has triggered widespread condemnation, with critics labeling it “ethnic cleansing” and a violation of international law.
The Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) said on Wednesday that it rejected any plan involving the displacement of Palestinians after U.S. President Donald Trump suggested Palestinians in Gaza move to Egypt or Jordan and the U.S. “take control” of the territory.
Secretary General Hussein al-Sheikh said the PLO “affirms its rejection of all calls for the displacement of the Palestinian people from their homeland.” China on Wednesday also said it was opposed to the “forced transfer” of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip after U.S. President Donald Trump said he planned to “take control” of the territory.
“China has always maintained that Palestinian rule over Palestinians is the basic principle of the postwar governance of Gaza, and we are opposed to the forced transfer of the residents of Gaza,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said.
Hamas rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to “take control” of the Gaza Strip, calling it “racist” and aimed at eliminating the Palestinian cause.
“The American racist stance aligns with the Israeli extreme right’s position in displacing our people and eliminating our cause,” Hamas spokesperson Abdel Latif al-Qanou said in a statement.
Türkiye stands firm on Palestinian rights
Türkiye has long opposed forced displacement in Gaza, arguing that the Palestinian people must be included in any peace process.
Fidan reiterated Türkiye remains committed to supporting a just and sustainable resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
