TRNC President confirms Türkiye and Greece to join next UN discussions
President Ersin Tatar of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) announced Tuesday that Türkiye and Greece would join the next round of talks with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The upcoming meeting follows an informal dinner held at UN headquarters with Nikos Christodoulides, leader of the Greek Cypriot administration.
TRNC is a state recognized only by Türkiye. Established in 1983, the TRNC remains internationally unrecognized, with the United Nations and most countries considering it part of the Republic of Cyprus.
“We agreed that the next meeting with the UN Secretary-General will include the participation of Türkiye and Greece,” Tatar stated. His comments come as the TRNC continues to advocate for a two-state solution, following decades of failed efforts to reach a federal agreement for the divided island of Cyprus.
Tatar stressed that the TRNC’s position remains firm. “Formal negotiations will not resume until TRNC’s sovereign equality and international status are recognized,” he told Anadolu, underlining that the recognition of the TRNC as a sovereign entity remains a non-negotiable condition for any future talks.
The TRNC leader also discussed the possibility of future meetings with Christodoulides on the island to address issues such as the opening of new border crossings. However, Tatar emphasized that such discussions would depend on acceptable terms being met by both sides.
