The Syrian Turkmen Council (STC) has voiced strong objections to being excluded from the National Dialogue Conference, stating that the exclusionary approach adopted by the conference’s organizing committee is unacceptable.

Turkmen Council rejects exclusion from political process

In a statement released by the STC, the council emphasized its long-standing support for Syria’s political transition and its commitment to the new government’s efforts to establish stability and security.

However, the council condemned the failure to include its representatives in the conference, calling it a deliberate oversight.

“As the Syrian Turkmen Council, we reiterate our support for the political process led by Syria’s new administration. However, we reject the exclusionary approach taken by the National Dialogue Conference Preparatory Committee, which has ignored the Syrian Turkmen Council despite its legitimate representation of the Turkmen community,” the statement read.

Historical role of Turkmen in Syria’s political struggle

The STC highlighted its participation in Syria’s revolution from its earliest days, stressing the sacrifices made by Turkmen fighters and civilians in the struggle against the previous regime.

The statement reaffirmed the council’s position as the only legitimate representative of the Syrian Turkmen, which has consistently supported the people’s freedom movement and opposed the former leadership.

The council also pointed out that discussions with the new government had initially suggested a commitment to Turkmen participation in the political process, making their exclusion from the conference a source of “great disappointment.”

Concerns over future political representation

The STC warned that sidelining political institutions and ethnic groups would have a detrimental effect on Syria’s broader political development.

“The future of Syria must include all its national components. Excluding political representatives from key discussions will negatively impact the country’s political trajectory,” the statement added.

The council asserted that the rights of the Turkmen population must be protected in the emerging political landscape and expressed concerns that the conference’s outcomes might not reflect the interests of the Turkmen community.

Call for inclusive governance in Syria

The STC underscored the necessity of fostering a democratic and inclusive political framework for Syria’s future, advocating for equal representation of all ethnic and political groups.

“Syria is not defined by a single identity, and no national component should be excluded from the political process,” the statement concluded.

Despite its exclusion from the current conference, the STC reaffirmed its commitment to working towards a future Syria where all communities have equal political representation.
