The Syrian Turkmen Assembly (STM) held a consultation meeting at its headquarters in Cobanbey, a town near the Türkiye-Syria border, where participants outlined key demands for the future of Turkmen communities in Syria.

The meeting, attended by approximately 400 representatives from Turkmen regions in Syria, concluded with a press statement emphasizing constitutional recognition, property rights, and linguistic protections.

Call for constitutional recognition and language rights

The press release called for the official recognition of Turkmen identity in Syria’s constitution and the establishment of a legal status guaranteeing their rights.

“Our education, cultural, and linguistic rights must be preserved, and the promotion of Turkish-language education in Syria should be ensured,” the statement read.

Additionally, Turkmen representatives urged fair representation in both civilian and military institutions. They called for Turkmen’s participation in constitutional drafting committees to ensure their community’s interests are safeguarded in Syria’s political future.

Property rights and economic development

The statement also addressed concerns over property rights, particularly regarding land and assets seized during the war. “Turkmen property rights must be protected, and legal measures should be initiated for the return of lands and assets confiscated during the conflict,” it stated.

Moreover, economic development was a key topic of discussion.

The participants emphasized the need to support Turkmen entrepreneurs and accelerate infrastructure projects in Turkmen-majority areas.

It underscored the importance of rebuilding Turkmen residential areas and expediting infrastructure projects.

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for Turkmen rights in all relevant forums. The consultation meeting concluded with a collective pledge to continue efforts toward securing the future of Syria’s Turkmen population.
