Syrian President al-Sharaa’s ‘historic’ visit marks start of ‘lasting friendship,’: Erdogan
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday described Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s visit to Ankara as a “historic” milestone, signaling the start of a new era of lasting friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
Sharaa, accompanied by Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani, arrived in Türkiye on Tuesday, marking their second diplomatic trip abroad since taking office. The visit follows Sharaa’s first foreign trip to Saudi Arabia.
Speaking at a joint press conference with al-Sharaa, Erdogan stressed Türkiye’s dedication to preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and unity.
Türkiye will continue to support Syrians
He reaffirmed Türkiye’s unwavering support, stating: “We never abandoned our Syrian sisters and brothers in their hardest times, and we will continue to support them in this new period.”
Erdogan expressed confidence in Syria’s ability to rebuild, adding: “We have no doubt that our Syrian sisters and brothers, who inspire the region with their resilience, will rebuild their country.” He emphasized Türkiye’s readiness to help reconstruct devastated Syrian cities and believes that speeding up economic recovery will encourage the voluntary return of Syrian refugees.
Strengthening bilateral ties
The two leaders discussed steps to boost security and economic stability. Erdogan highlighted progress in various areas of bilateral relations, including trade, civil aviation, energy, health, and education.
He also called on the Arab and Islamic world for both financial and moral support for Syria’s new administration and people, deeming it “crucial.”
Combating terrorism
Erdogan pledged Türkiye’s continued assistance in Syria’s fight against terrorist groups, including Daesh and the PKK.
“By acting in solidarity with Syria, I believe we will fully establish a climate of peace and security in our shared region, free from terrorism,” he said.
Al-Sharaa, who led opposition groups against the Bashar al-Assad regime, was declared president last week. Assad, Syria’s regime leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on Dec. 8, 2024, ending the Baath Party’s long-standing rule, which began in 1963.
