Syrian National Dialogue Conference begins in Damascus

The Syrian National Dialogue Conference commenced in the capital, Damascus, with over 600 attendees, marking a key moment in the country’s ongoing political transition.
President calls for national unity
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa delivered the opening speech at the conference held at the People’s Palace.
He emphasized the importance of state control over arms, stating, “The unity and monopoly of arms in the hand of the state is not a luxury but a duty and an obligation.”
Sharaa called on Syrians to unite in rebuilding the nation, saying, “We invite you to work together for Syria’s recovery, healing its wounds, and securing a future of stability.” He assured citizens that their role in preserving and reconstructing the country was essential.

Foreign Minister advocates for sovereignty and investment
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani addressed the country’s challenges in the wake of past conflicts and sanctions, noting that Syria had faced unprecedented hardships.
“We have resisted pressures following our liberation and focused on openness and effective diplomacy,” he said, highlighting efforts to remove economic sanctions and attract investment opportunities.
Asaad al-Shaibani reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to sovereignty, stating, “We will not accept any violation of our sovereignty or identity, while remaining open to those who respect the will of our people.”

Conference outcomes to serve as advisory recommendations
The conference, organized by the Preparatory Committee established on February 12, includes representatives from various sectors. The committee emphasized that participants were selected to represent all segments of Syrian society.
Throughout the event, six panel discussions will address critical topics, including:
- Transitional justice
- Constitutional reforms
- Institutional rebuilding
- Individual freedoms
- Civil society development
- Economic recovery
The conclusions of the conference will be non-binding but will serve as recommendations for the country’s new leadership.

Extensive preparatory meetings held nationwide
In preparation for the conference, the committee conducted over 30 meetings across various Syrian provinces, engaging more than 4,000 participants.
Initial discussions began on February 16 in Homs, followed by meetings in Tartus, Idlib, Hama, Suwayda, Daraa, Deir ez-Zor, and Aleppo. Additional consultations were held in Damascus with representatives from regions under terrorist organization PKK/YPG’s occupation, including al-Hasakah and Raqqa.
