Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support for Syrian sovereignty in a Wednesday conversation with Ahmad al-Sharaa, who assumed leadership following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government.

The development marks a significant shift in Syria’s political landscape after opposition forces successfully overthrew the Assad regime in December. The offensive that led to the government’s collapse was led by SNA.

Sharaa had previously disclosed to the Saudi news channel Al Arabiya that he wanted Syria to establish diplomatic relations with Russia based on mutual respect.

The regime’s fall came after more than 13 years of civil conflict that began with pro-democracy protests in 2011 and evolved into one of the region’s most complex and enduring conflicts.
