President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to visit Damascus ahead of Ramadan, marking a potential milestone in Türkiye-Syria relations, sources reported to the Türkiye daily.
The visit would follow a historic meeting between President Erdogan and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Ankara, the first joint high-level meeting between the two countries years.
Türkiye-Syria diplomatic talks in Ankara
President Erdogan hosted Ahmed al-Sharaa at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, where the two leaders held discussions on counterterrorism efforts and bilateral relations.
Following the meeting, both leaders addressed the press, with President Erdogan stressing a joint approach to regional security.
“We discussed the steps to be taken against Daesh and PKK/YPG in Syria. I believe that by acting in solidarity, we can fully establish an atmosphere of peace and security in our shared region,” Erdogan stated.
Erdogan’s anticipated visit to Damascus
Following their discussions, Ahmed al-Sharaa extended an invitation for Erdogan to visit Syria, expressing his honor in hosting the Turkish president at the earliest opportunity.
According to sources, President Erdogan is expected to travel to Damascus before the start of Ramadan, where he is also anticipated to perform prayers at the Umayyad Mosque.
While an exact date has not been confirmed, the visit would mark a significant step in rebuilding diplomatic ties between the two nations.
