No tolerance for terrorism, stability in Syria key to peace: Turkish Defense Minister

Minister of National Defense Yasar Guler stated that all entities refusing to disarm and promoting division over unity will continue to be legitimate targets.
In a video conference attended by top military leaders and commanders from within Türkiye and across borders, Guler reaffirmed the country’s firm stance against terrorism and emphasized Ankara’s role in regional stability.
“Those who insist on not laying down arms and who fuel division instead of fraternity will remain our legitimate targets, as they were in the past,” Guler said.

Ankara’s comprehensive security strategy
Guler noted that Türkiye is navigating a period marked by multi-dimensional threats and instability both regionally and globally.
He highlighted the importance of a strong, ready, and deterrent Turkish Armed Forces (TAF), which he described as a guarantor of peace and stability across land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace.
“TAF continues its duties with determination and discipline, and your work on the ground strengthens our country’s position at the negotiation table,” Guler added.
Syria’s future, Türkiye’s role
Guler reiterated that establishing security and preserving territorial integrity in Syria remains vital. “We continue to support the development of Syria’s security and defense capacities. Our efforts against all terrorist organizations, especially Daesh, are ongoing,” he stated.
He added that Türkiye is actively supporting regional ownership of peace initiatives, including a proposed joint operations center with neighboring countries, and stressed that some recent actions in Syria have undermined stability.
“Türkiye’s undeniable experience on the ground is acknowledged and seen as a source of solutions, especially by the new Syrian government,” he noted.

Dialogue prioritized, but firm stance maintained
While reaffirming Türkiye’s commitment to dialogue, Guler warned against exploiting its constructive stance by stating, “Türkiye’s positive approach should not be manipulated. We will not allow meaningless ambitions, faits accomplis, or new balance-of-power games to take root.”
“TAF is not a threat to anyone who does not threaten us. Wherever we go, we bring stability, peace, and security,” he added.
Monitoring developments in Syria, YPG agreement
Referring to the recent withdrawal and transfer process between the SDF/YPG and the new Syrian government, Guler emphasized that Türkiye is closely watching the developments and has clearly communicated its expectations and concerns.
He also discussed the evolving status of the PKK, noting a shift from “baseless ambitions” to “rational initiatives.”
“Those truly committed to peace will be supported. However, those who abuse the process, stall for time, or use it as a propaganda tool will face a resolute Türkiye,” Guler warned.
“No statement or declaration holds value unless backed by action. Eliminating all forms of terrorism is not just vital for Türkiye, but for the peace of the entire region and the world,” he added.

Türkiye’s global peacekeeping contributions
Highlighting Türkiye’s broader defense commitments, Guler pointed to missions in Libya, Somalia, the Black Sea, the Eastern Mediterranean, and European security structures.
He detailed the recent successful deployment and return of Turkish troops involved in NATO operations in Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
“Our military engagements reflect Türkiye’s role as a global peace provider. TAF will continue fulfilling its responsibilities with the same determination and discipline,” he said.
