Marhaf Abu Qasra appointed as Syria’s new defense minister
Following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime, members of Syria’s transitional administration are gradually being appointed. In a statement, the transitional government revealed that Marhaf Abu Qasra, a high-ranking commander of the opposition forces that ousted Assad, has been appointed as the new Defense Minister.
Abu Qasra is recognized for leading several key operations carried out by opposition groups against the Assad regime.
Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s regime leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups took control of Damascus on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party regime, which had been in power since 1963.
The takeover came after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) captured key cities in a lightning offensive that lasted less than two weeks.
