Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan strengthen bilateral ties in informal summit in Almaty

Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev met in Almaty, Kazakhstan, for an informal summit.

Following the meeting, the two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations and increasing cooperation in Central Asia.

Warm reception in Almaty

At the beginning of the meeting, President Tokayev warmly welcomed President Mirziyoyev to Almaty Airport. The two leaders then explored the natural beauty of Almaty, visiting Kazakhstan’s largest ski resort, Shymbulak, and the famous Medeu skating rink, which attracts tourists because of its high altitude and scenic setting.

After the visit, they held an informal discussion about strengthening ties between the two nations. Tokayev emphasized such meetings provide a great opportunity for exchanging views and enhancing cooperation between friendly and allied countries.

Strengthening bilateral cooperation

In his remarks, President Tokayev stated, “We are allies, and the situation in the entire Central Asian region largely depends on how our relations evolve.”

President Mirziyoyev also highlighted the significance of the meeting in strengthening bilateral ties, adding, “Our special relationship allows us to solve many problems, and everything we agree upon bears fruit.”

Mirziyoyev congratulated Kazakhstan on its economic successes and noted, “Even though this is an informal meeting, I came with a large team. Such meetings give significant momentum to our relations.”

Key areas of discussion

During the meeting, Tokayev and Mirziyoyev addressed regional and international issues as well as perspectives for future cooperation in various sectors, including political, trade and economy, transportation and transit, investment, energy, water resources, industry, tourism, culture, and humanitarian cooperation.

At the end of the discussions, both leaders reaffirmed their strong commitment to deepening the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
