Jordan’s Foreign Minister to hold talks in Iran following Hamas leader’s assassination
Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi will visit Iran on Sunday for rare discussions with his Iranian counterpart.
This visit follows the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, as reported by Iranian state media.
Escalating tensions
The assassination of Haniyeh on Wednesday has significantly heightened regional tensions.
The incident occurred a day after an Israeli strike in Beirut, which resulted in the death of Fuad Shukr, a senior military commander from Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Lebanese group.
Both Hamas and Iran have accused Israel of orchestrating Haniyeh’s assassination and have vowed to retaliate. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the incident.
Diplomatic efforts to prevent escalation
Safadi’s visit is part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further regional escalation. Many countries are believing that the escalation will rise in the region, since Iran still didn’t conduct retaliation strikes.
The United States and its partners, including France, Britain, Italy, and Egypt, engaged in diplomatic contacts on Saturday to mitigate the situation.
The visit also marks an effort to improve Jordan-Iran relations, which have been strained because of Jordan’s claims against pro-Iranian militias in Syria for smuggling narcotics into the country. Much footage confirms Jordan’s claim about this issue.
Additionally, tensions rose after Jordan participated in intercepting Iran’s direct attack on Israel last April.
