Jordanian government resigns following parliamentary elections
Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher al-Khasawneh submitted his government’s resignation to King Abdullah II Sunday, according to state media.
The move comes less than a week after the parliamentary elections on Sept. 10, in which the opposition Islamic Action Front made significant gains.
The resignation allows King Abdullah to appoint a new government that aligns with the newly elected legislature.
This is part of Jordan’s constitutional process, aimed at refreshing the mandate of the executive branch following electoral outcomes.
While the king may reappoint Khasawneh, he also has the option of selecting a new prime minister to form the next government.
Khasawneh, who became prime minister in October 2020, succeeding Omar Al-Razzaz, holds the distinction of being the longest-serving prime minister under King Abdullah II’s reign.
