An Israeli tank shell struck an office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Gaza on April 16, marking the second such attack on the organization’s premises in three weeks, the humanitarian group said Thursday.

“The ICRC is outraged that on 16 April an ICRC premises in Gaza was struck and damaged by an explosive,” the organization stated.

A similar attack occurred on March 24, when a tank shell hit another ICRC office in the area, the group added. Both incidents targeted buildings that were clearly marked and had been regularly communicated to all parties involved in the conflict, according to the ICRC.

Civilians, medical staff face rising risks in Gaza

The humanitarian organization expressed deep concern over the rising risks faced by civilians, medical staff, and aid workers in Gaza.

“These incidents highlight the risks to which civilians, medical staff, and humanitarian workers in the Gaza Strip are exposed today,” the ICRC warned. “They also impact the ability of the ICRC to provide essential protection and assistance to hundreds of thousands of people who need assistance to survive and contribute to an ever-shrinking humanitarian space.”

The ICRC has called for greater protection for humanitarian workers and facilities in conflict zones.

Death toll rises amid continued attacks

More than 51,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in a brutal Israeli onslaught since October 2023, with most of the victims being women and children.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its war on the enclave.
