Israeli military airstrikes hit tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis, killing at least 40 people and wounding 60, according to local sources.
Eyewitnesses reported that Israeli warplanes targeted the Al-Mawasi area in western Khan Younis, which was considered “safe” by authorities. The impact created deep craters, destroying 20 to 40 tents where Palestinian families were taking shelter.
Rescue teams on the ground reported difficulty reaching the dead and wounded due to a lack of electricity and bodies scattered around the site, raising concerns that the death toll could rise.
The Israeli military stated that the attack targeted a Hamas command center in the al-Mawasi area. Hamas countered, claiming that no resistance fighters were in the area.
The Civil Defense Directorate in Gaza announced that search and rescue operations are ongoing.
