Israeli airstrikes have reportedly struck key targets in Syria, including a base on Mount Qassioun overlooking Damascus and defense factories near Masyaf, escalating tensions in the region.

The strikes also targeted the countryside of Suwayda, with smoke and explosions visible as Israeli forces launched the assault.

In a significant development, Russian state-owned news agency Sputnik reported that Israeli troops advanced toward Damascus for the first time, entering the town of Mughr al-Mir in the Qatana region, southwest of the capital.

Israeli soldiers reportedly searched a Syrian military site in the area, marking an unprecedented incursion into Syrian territory near Damascus.

Israeli army captured the buffer zone in Syria’s occupied Golan Heights on Sunday, shortly after Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu announced the collapse of a U.N.-monitored disengagement agreement with Damascus.

Israel mounted hundreds of airstrikes against military bases, air defense stations and intelligence headquarters as well as long- and short-range missile depots, and unconventional weapon stockpiles across Syria.

Syrian opposition forces seized Damascus on Sunday after a lightning advance that sent Bashar al-Assad fleeing to Russia after a 13-year civil war and 53 years of rule by his family.
