Israeli airstrike hits Gaza school, killing several and injuring many children
At least 47 Palestinians were killed following an Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced individuals in Gaza City on Sunday, September 1, according to a medical source.
The strike targeted Safad School in the Zeitoun neighborhood, where numerous people were also injured.
Dozens injured, primarily children
Many of the injured, primarily children, were taken to Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital for treatment.
The incident marks a continuation of hostilities amid Israel’s ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip, which have seen civilian facilities, including schools, hospitals, and places of worship, being struck.
These actions have persisted despite a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Last month, an Israeli strike on Al-Taba’een School in Gaza City resulted in over 100 deaths and numerous injuries, with more than 6,000 displaced people taking refuge there at the time.
Death toll rises, mostly women and children
According to local health authorities, the ongoing conflict in Gaza has led to the deaths of over 40,700 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children, and has injured more than 94,100 others.
The region continues to face severe humanitarian challenges, including shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies, under an ongoing blockade.
The International Court of Justice is reviewing accusations of genocide against Israel and has issued an order to halt military operations in Rafah, where over one million Palestinians had taken refuge before the area was invaded on May 6.
