Iraq’s borders with Iran are “fully secured and protected,” a top border guard official said Tuesday, assuring that measures are in place against smuggling and border violations.

Lt. Gen. Mohammed Abdul Wahab Sukka, commander of Iraq’s Border Guard, made the statement during a meeting with Iranian border guard commanders. He emphasized Iraq’s readiness to cooperate with Iran on securing borders and facilitating the movement of pilgrims, Iraq’s state news agency INA reported.

“All shared borders with Iran are fully secured and protected against any smuggling operations or border violations,” Sukka said.

Iranian Border Guard Commander Ahmad Ali Goudarz echoed the sentiment, praising the cooperation between the two countries’ border forces.

“Iran has 1,609 kilometers of common borders with Iraq, and this common and wide border is monitored and managed well thanks to the excellent relations and cooperation between the border guards of the two countries,” Goudarz said.
