Iraq completes railway designs for major development road linking to Türkiye
Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced that railway designs for the country’s ambitious Development Road Project have been finalized.
Speaking at an event in Baghdad, Sudani provided updates on the project, which aims to transform Iraq into a key regional transit hub.
“The railway designs for the Development Road have been completed,” Sudani said. “We need five years to complete the entire project.”
The prime minister added that a third Cabinet meeting on the project is scheduled for November. A committee to oversee the management of the initiative is also in the works, according to Sudani.
“All of Iraq’s territory is under the control of our security forces,” Sudani said. “We have issued instructions to develop a comprehensive plan to secure the Development Road.”
From Iraq to Türkiye
The project, stretching from the Grand Faw Port in the Persian Gulf through northern Iraq and into Türkiye, will include 1,200 kilometers of rail and road infrastructure.
The route is set to link key Iraqi cities, including Basra, Baghdad, and Mosul, with Türkiye’s railway network, providing a vital transportation corridor across the region.
