Iranian Revolutionary Guard adviser dies from injuries in Syria
A senior military adviser from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Air and Space Force (IRGCASF) has died from injuries sustained in Syria, according to a report by the semi-official Fars news agency on Thursday.
Col. Ahmadreza Afshari was injured in an aerial bombardment that took place between late July and early August. The strike, described by Iranian officials as a “violation of Syria’s sovereignty,” has not been attributed to a specific country by Iranian media. However, both the United States and Israel have conducted strikes against Iran-aligned factions in Syria in recent months.
Top Revolutionary Guard Commander Hossein Salami confirmed Afshari’s death, referring to him as a “martyr” who succumbed to his injuries after several weeks.
Iran has been a key supporter of Syrian President Bashar Assad since the civil war began in 2011, with Tehran’s influence growing significantly as a result of its military and economic backing. The region has been a flashpoint for conflicts involving multiple international actors, including Israel and the United States.
