Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations has issued a stern response following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

The statement declared, “The response to the assassination will undoubtedly be a special operation,” implying a harsh and deeply regrettable action against those responsible.

The statement, posted on Iran’s U.N. Mission’s social media account, emphasized that the operation would be “severe” and cause profound remorse to the perpetrators.

Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s new President Mesoud Pezeskian. On the morning of July 31, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced that Haniyeh was killed in an attack on his residence.

Both Iran and Hamas have blamed Israel for the assassination, though Israeli officials have not commented on the incident.

Ismail Haniyeh had been serving as the head of Hamas’s Political Bureau since being elected by the Hamas Shura Council on May 6, 2017.
