India will deliver the locally developed Akash 1S air defense missile system to Armenia later this year.

According to media reports, Armenia has placed an order for 15 Akash missile systems in 2022, estimated to be worth $720 million. Armenia will be the first foreign customer for these systems.

Akash-1S systems employ a combination of simultaneous active search and targeting to ensure dependable defense against air threats, including fighters, guided missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

In recent years, India and Armenia have seen a significant increase in their defense cooperation, which has the potential to evolve into a strategic partnership. Defense cooperation, military equipment purchases, mutual visits, and joint military exercises have substantially strengthened the relationship between 2020 and 2024.

India has established itself as a significant partner in the South Caucasus by assisting Armenia in its endeavors to improve its defense capabilities, which are consistent with our shared strategic objectives. This collaboration enables Armenia to diversify its military capabilities and offers India the chance to broaden its foreign policy. The establishment of a comprehensive and strategic defense partnership between India and Armenia would be advantageous for both nations in the long term.
