Yemen’s Houthi rebel forces launched two missile attacks on the Panama-flagged Turkish cargo vessel Anadolu S within 24 hours in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The ship’s crew survived both attacks unscathed.

The Anadolu S, a 52,200 dwt bulk carrier owned by Istanbul-based Oras Shipping, was targeted by the Houthis while sailing 46 kilometers west of the Yemeni city of Mocha. The Houthi rebels first made radio contact with the ship, attempting to divert it toward Yemeni territorial waters.

The first missile attack occurred on November 17, 2024, about 48 kilometers west of Mocha, where a missile landed near the vessel, the Associate Press reported. Despite the proximity, the ship’s captain maintained course without deviation.

A second missile strike hit the ship on November 18, 2024, about 112 kilometers southeast of Aden. Again, the missile landed near the vessel, but both the Anadolu S and its crew continued toward port without injury.

Oras Shipping confirmed the attacks, stating that the missiles fell into the open sea, away from the ship. No serious injuries or casualties were reported.

Türkiye condemns Houthi attack

Türkiye on Wednesday condemned the missile attack targeting Turkish cargo vessel in the Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthis, saying measures were being taken to prevent any such further incidents.

“We condemn the missile attacks by the Houthis on the Panama-flagged dry cargo ship Anadolu S, owned by a Turkish company, while sailing off the coast of Yemen,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“Necessary initiatives are being taken to prevent the recurrence of a similar incident,” the statement added.
