Hamas stated that its resistance forces would not be defeated by Israel’s escalating pressures and violence in Jenin, a city in the occupied West Bank. This statement comes after Israel launched its fourth consecutive day of attacks on the city.

Why it matters?

The escalation in Jenin is part of a broader and intensifying conflict between Israeli forces and Palestinian resistance groups in the occupied territories. The ongoing violence continues to add to the humanitarian crisis in the region, with significant loss of life and damage to infrastructure.

The resistance’s refusal to yield under Israeli pressure marks a key moment in the conflict.

Hamas leader Abdurrahman al-Shadid emphasized in a Telegram message that despite daily raids, arrests and attacks in Jenin, Palestinian resistance forces have maintained their stance against Israel’s occupation. He stated:

  • Armed Palestinian groups in Jenin had engaged in fierce battles with Israeli soldiers.
  • Resistance fighters ambushed Israeli forces, causing significant casualties.
  • All Israeli efforts to suppress the resistance have been unsuccessful.

Following the cease-fire agreement in Gaza on Jan. 19, Israel launched an attack on Jenin on Jan. 21, dubbed “Iron Wall.” The attack by Israeli forces resulted in:

  • 14 Palestinians killed
  • Around 50 others injured
  • Critical infrastructure in the city, including water, electricity, and communications networks, was damaged.
  • Several homes in the area destroyed

The city of Jenin has long been a flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly known for its stronghold of Palestinian resistance groups. The persistent conflict in Jenin and other parts of the West Bank has led to:

  • Widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure.
  • Growing humanitarian needs.
  • An environment of fear and instability for local residents.
