Hamas called on the international community on Saturday to protect Palestinian women from ongoing “Israeli atrocities” in a statement made on International Women’s Day.

Palestinian women have been disproportionately affected by Israel’s military actions, with women and children accounting for 70% of the total 46,960 deaths reported by Jan. 19, 2025.

Hamas criticized the international community for not taking sufficient action to protect Palestinian women and condemned the failure to address these human rights violations.

The situation in Gaza has created a severe humanitarian crisis, with over 12,000 Palestinian women killed, and thousands more injured, detained or displaced.

Details

  • Hamas condemned the treatment of Palestinian female prisoners in Israeli jails, describing their conditions as “heinous,” citing physical and psychological torture.
  • Over 12,000 Palestinian women have been martyred, with thousands more affected by injuries, detentions, and displacement.
  • The group also criticized the double standards of the U.S. and some Western nations in addressing prisoners’ rights, calling their response inadequate.
  • A cease-fire and prisoner exchange agreement has been in place since Jan. 19, halting Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

Background

Gaza has been severely devastated by Israel’s military campaign, with women and children representing the majority of casualties.

The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for war crimes committed during the conflict.

Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its military actions in Gaza.
