Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis affirmed on Tuesday that the outcome of this week’s U.S. elections will not affect the strong relationship between Athens and Washington.

Speaking during a meeting with President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Mitsotakis stressed that Greek-American relations are “strategic” and will remain unaffected by the election results.

“Regardless of the outcome, Greek-American relations are strategic and their content will not be affected,” Mitsotakis stated, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

Mitsotakis expressed Greece’s readiness to continue collaborating with the new U.S. administration, emphasizing the importance of Europe’s geopolitical development amid global economic challenges.

He referenced a report by former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi, which highlighted Europe’s need to respond to the growing dominance of the U.S. and China in the global economy.

Draghi’s report, submitted in September, calls for a coordinated EU industrial policy, faster decision-making, increased investment, and joint borrowing to bolster the EU’s economic competitiveness.

Meanwhile, as Americans cast their votes for the presidency, Congress and local officials, the presidential race between Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump remains tightly contested.
