Gantz expected to resign over lack of clear post-war Gaza plan
Israeli War Cabinet member Benny Gantz issued a strong ultimatum to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in May to formulate a thorough post-war strategy for the Gaza Strip by June 8 or he would resign.
Gantz is expected to resign from the emergency government on Saturday, following the expiration of his deadline set last month for establishing a definitive plan to “achieve victory” in Gaza.
This decision comes despite appeals from the U.S., which considers Gantz a “close partner” and has urged him to stay in office.
Families of Israeli hostages in Gaza have also implored Gantz not to resign until a prisoner exchange agreement with Hamas is secured. In the meantime, Netanyahu’s office has scheduled a broader ministerial discussion for Sunday, just after Gantz’s self-imposed deadline, according to Israeli public broadcaster KAN.
KAN reported that Gantz’s proposed plan includes several crucial elements: the return of hostages from Gaza, weakening Hamas’s control, disarming the Gaza Strip, establishing a European-Arab coalition to oversee the region, ensuring the return of northern residents to their homes, and implementing universal military service for all Israelis.
Israel has continued its intense offensive on Gaza since Oct. 7, despite a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire.
According to local health authorities, around 36,600 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have been killed in Gaza, with over 83,000 others injured.
Israel is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which recently ordered Tel Aviv to immediately halt its operations in Rafah, a southern city where over a million Palestinians had sought refuge before it was invaded on May 6.
