Ex-CIA chief warns Trump may give Israel ‘blank check,’ raising risk of war with Iran
Former CIA Director and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has raised concerns that President-elect Donald Trump could offer Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “blank check” in the Middle East, potentially escalating conflicts, including an all-out war with Iran.
Panetta’s remarks come as Trump prepares to take office following his victory over Kamala Harris in the recent election.
Panetta warns of Trump’s unrestricted support for Israel
Panetta, speaking on the One Decision podcast with former MI6 Chief Sir Richard Dearlove, said Trump is likely to grant Netanyahu significant freedom in the region.
“He’s basically going to give Netanyahu a blank check,” Panetta said, predicting a more aggressive stance toward Iran, which could increase instability in the Middle East.
Netanyahu, who has overseen strikes on Iranian assets, reportedly spoke with Trump during the campaign, expressing support for the incoming administration.
Potential shift in US policy on Ukraine
Panetta also suggested that Trump might favor allowing Russia to retain control of Ukrainian territories seized since the invasion began two years ago.
He expressed doubts about Trump’s ability to negotiate effectively, referencing Trump’s past meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. “I would not put Trump in charge of these negotiations. It requires someone experienced, like a secretary of state, to broker a fair deal,” Panetta remarked.
Republican concerns over Trump’s foreign policy approach
Panetta voiced skepticism about Trump’s capacity to navigate complex foreign policy issues, citing potential challenges from his own party.
“He could simply capitulate to autocrats, but I’m not sure Republicans would allow him to give tyrants free rein,” Panetta added.
The former defense secretary outlined a difficult foreign policy landscape for Trump’s second term, mentioning ongoing conflicts involving Russia, China, Iran and North Korea.
Broader implications for US global strategy
Panetta highlighted several global flashpoints, warning that the U.S. must navigate a “very dangerous world” under Trump’s leadership. He noted the rising tensions in the Middle East, ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, and potential conflicts involving China and Taiwan.
