Burhan Koroglu, acting charge d’affaires of the Turkish Embassy in Damascus, has indicated that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is contemplating a visit to the Syrian capital, following recent diplomatic developments. “After our Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, our President Erdogan is also considering coming to Damascus,” Koroglu said in an interview.

In an interview with Turkish media outlet TVNET, Koroglu emphasized the significance of Erdogan’s possible visit, stating, “I believe we will have a relationship with Syria similar to that during the Ottoman period.”

This comes in the wake of the Bashar al-Assad regime’s fall, as Türkiye and Syria begin to reestablish diplomatic ties. The recent visit of Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin to Damascus has already drawn significant attention toward Erdogan’s potential visit.

President Erdogan had previously announced that Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan would soon travel to Damascus to work on the evolving relationship between the two nations.

“Our Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will hopefully go there soon. They will work together on the new structure,” Erdogan revealed earlier.
