China hosts Palestinian unity talks in Beijing
Palestinian resistance groups, including Fatah and Hamas, intend to form a temporary unity government following discussions in Beijing, announced China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning.
Representatives from 14 Palestinian groups signed the “Beijing Dialogue” on July 21 to end their divisions and form a unified front.
During a press conference, Mao detailed the critical points of the signed declaration:
- Intent to form a temporary national unity government: The declaration emphasizes the intention of all Palestinian groups to establish a temporary national unity government based on consensus and in line with the existing Palestinian fundamental law. It also includes plans for reconstructing Gaza and holding general elections as soon as possible according to the accepted election laws. The declaration notes the steps taken toward forming a new “National Commission” in line with these laws.
- Agreement on national unity: The declaration highlights an agreement among the parties to achieve national unity within the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) that encompasses all groups. It also includes a commitment to establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and to maintain the territorial integrity of Palestinian lands, including the West Bank, Jerusalem, and Gaza. The need for a conference under the auspices of the United Nations, with regional and international participation, is also mentioned.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed China’s sincere hope that Palestinian groups will achieve national unity and establish an independent Palestinian state at an early date. He added China would continue to work with all relevant parties on this issue.
Beijing meeting significant step toward national unity: Hamas
Hamas’ National Relations Office Head, Hossam Bedran, stated that the declaration reached by Palestinian groups in Beijing represents a substantial step towards achieving Palestinian national unity. China hosted a “comprehensive national meeting” on July 21 and 22, which included significant Palestinian groups such as Fatah and Hamas.
