Azerbaijan’s President Aliyev appreciates EU mediation in peace talks with Armenia
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev expressed appreciation for the European Union’s mediation in peace negotiations with Armenia, highlighting the EU’s role in structuring the ongoing talks.
His comments came during the discussions with EU Council President Charles Michel on the sidelines of the 29th U.N. Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Aliyev commends EU role in Azerbaijan-Armenia peace talks
The Azerbaijani presidency released a statement on Monday noting that Aliyev commended the EU’s involvement in peace talks with Armenia.
He highlighted that EU Council President Charles Michel’s mediation efforts have played a significant role in forming the framework and agenda for these negotiations.
“We recognize and appreciate the EU’s mediation efforts in structuring our ongoing talks with Armenia,” Aliyev reportedly said during the meeting.
Climate change central topic of discussion
The two leaders also addressed climate change issues, with Michel expressing hope for substantial progress at COP29 in Baku.
According to the Azerbaijani presidency, Michel emphasized that climate action remains a priority on the EU agenda and congratulated Aliyev on hosting the international climate conference.
Michel noted the EU is committed to delivering financial support and meeting its climate goals, adding that the bloc stands ready to support global climate initiatives.
Development of EU-Azerbaijan relations
The talks between Aliyev and Michel also covered the development of broader relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union.
Michel took to the social media platform X to underline that he and Aliyev discussed “all aspects of bilateral relations,” including climate commitments and regional stability.
