Assad regime PM agrees to hand over power to Syrian Salvation Government
In Syria, Assad regime Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali agrees to hand over power to the Idlib-based Syrian Salvation Government.
Syrian opposition forces launched a massive offensive over the course of 10 days, capturing key cities and, on Sunday, the capital Damascus. This rapid advance, backed by army defections, led to the collapse of the Assad regime after 13 years of civil war.
Assad and his family fled to Moscow where Russia granted them asylum.
The Salvation Government, established in 2017, has been working to provide essential services to people in areas cut off from the Assad regime, particularly in rebel-held strongholds.
Following the recent seizure of Aleppo by opposition forces, authorities have begun restoring critical services such as water, communications, and electricity to the city.
Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city, had long been under the control of the Assad regime until the Syrian opposition’s swift advance. The restoration efforts are seen as part of the broader initiative by the Salvation Government to support communities now under rebel control.
