Armenia expands military capabilities with global deals
Through expanded international defense collaborations and new procurement agreements, Armenia is making significant efforts to bolster its military capabilities and improve its defense systems.
Collaboration with India and modernization efforts
Armenia is negotiating with India to procure Astra air-to-air missiles and seek support for the modernization of its Su-30 fighter jets. The four Su-30 aircraft acquired from Russia in 2019 were reportedly ineffective during the 2020 Karabakh conflict due to limitations in their armament. This situation has underscored the necessity for Armenia to enhance and modernize its air force. Additionally, Armenia is seeking assistance from India for both military aircraft maintenance and pilot training, indicating a broader intention to collaborate on defense improvements.
India is set to commence the delivery of its Akash 1S air defense missile systems to Armenia later this year.
Defense cooperation with France and Ukraine
In response to insufficient support from Russia, Armenia is diversifying its defense partnerships by collaborating with France. The country plans to acquire Mistral man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS), Caesar self-propelled howitzers, and Samp/T long-range air defense systems from France.
There have also been reports suggesting that Armenia has transferred certain Russian-made air defense systems to Ukraine. Allegedly, Armenia has provided Ukraine with S-300 and other air defense systems. Such transfers could present legal and diplomatic challenges to the redistribution of Russian military equipment.
These developments reflect Armenia’s strategic efforts to restructure and strengthen its military capabilities through diversified international partnerships.
