Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev declared his country’s full support for the international recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), speaking at the “Towards a New World Order” international forum held at ADA University in Baku.

Aliyev emphasized that Azerbaijan would always stand by TRNC, saying, “We are always with our brothers… Our brothers in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus can rest assured that we will always support the recognition of their country as an independent state by the international community.”

Azerbaijan reaffirms support for Turkish Cyprus in the international arena

Aliyev recalled Azerbaijan’s role in supporting TRNC’s observer status in the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) and noted that Turkish Cyprus President Ersin Tatar was invited to the informal summit in Shusha.

The TRNC flag was flown at the summit, signaling political solidarity.

“We only think about how we can help our brothers preserve their statehood,” Aliyev added.

He criticized the European Union’s decision to accept the Greek Cypriot administration after rejecting the Annan Plan, which TRNC had supported. Aliyev stated this was a clear example of double standards in international politics.

Aliyev on regional conflicts and international mediation

Addressing questions on regional tensions, Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan had restored its territorial integrity and sovereignty. He warned, however, that emerging threats remain and emphasized the need for constant readiness.

He also commented on Armenia’s recent arms supplies from new allies, stating such moves do not contribute to peace in the region.

Aliyev added that Azerbaijan played a key role in mediating between Türkiye and Israel during a prior diplomatic rift and expressed concern about renewed tensions between the two close partners.

Advocacy for a stronger Turkic cooperation

Aliyev reiterated his call for a more results-driven Organization of Turkic States, “We want the OTS to be stronger and more result-oriented.”

Highlighting shared history, language, and traditions, he said Azerbaijan would continue to work to deepen cooperation within the Turkic world.

On Ukraine, Russia, and peace prospects

Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Aliyev said Azerbaijan consistently supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity. He warned that ceasefires alone do not end wars by saying, “Ceasefires never stop wars.”

He questioned the realism of expecting lasting peace when neither party is willing to make territorial concessions, and emphasized that most wars end only through capitulation.

Azerbaijan’s strategic role and energy diplomacy

Aliyev pointed out Azerbaijan’s leadership within the Non-Aligned Movement and its strategic partnerships across Central Asia.

He said Azerbaijan could become a vital partner for the United States, thanks to its strong military, resources, and geopolitical leverage.

He also warned of an upcoming energy shortfall in Europe, citing the European Union’s increasing demand and slow transition to green energy.

He stressed the importance of ongoing infrastructure projects like the planned 4 GW cable from Azerbaijan to Romania.
