Syrian regime forces, supported by Russian warplanes, conducted airstrikes on Idlib’s city center on Sunday, killing four civilians and wounding 20 others, according to local Civil Defense sources.
Nine airstrikes target marketplace, residential areas
The attacks began early Sunday morning, with at least nine airstrikes targeting a marketplace and residential areas in Idlib, according to an opposition-affiliated aircraft observatory.
Civil Defense teams reported significant damage to infrastructure, with preliminary findings confirming the civilian casualties and injuries.
Escalating violence in Idlib
The airstrikes come amid ongoing clashes between Assad regime forces and anti-regime armed groups in northern Syria.
Fighting erupted on Nov. 27 in the western countryside of Aleppo province, with anti-regime groups making rapid territorial gains in recent days.
By Saturday, opposition forces had seized much of Idlib’s city center, including the strategic town of Khan Shaykhun.
The capture of Khan Shaykhun marked the establishment of opposition control over the entire Idlib province.
Civilian toll, humanitarian concerns
Sunday’s airstrikes underscore the escalating humanitarian crisis in Idlib, the last major stronghold of opposition forces in Syria.
The region, home to millions of displaced Syrians, has been subjected to repeated airstrikes, raising concerns about civilian safety and access to humanitarian aid.
