In a historic move following the fall of the Baath regime last December, Syria’s military operations administration announced Wednesday the appointment of Ahmed al-Sharaa as the country’s transitional president, along with major structural reforms.

These include the repeal of the 2012 Constitution and the dissolution of the former regime’s parliament, army, and security agencies.

The official SANA news agency declared the “Victory of the Revolution,” noting that all military factions, as well as revolutionary political and civil bodies, will be disbanded and integrated into state institutions.

The reforms also signal the end of the Assad-era ruling Baath Party and the National Progressive Front, with all affiliated organizations and committees being dissolved and barred from reformation under any new name.

Ahmed al-Sharaa has been authorized to establish a temporary legislative council to govern the country until a permanent constitution is adopted.

Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s regime leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups took control of Damascus on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party’s regime, which had been in power since 1963. A new administration led by Al-Sharaa has now taken control of the country.
