Four Iraqi soldiers were killed, and three others wounded in a Daesh terrorist attack in Kirkuk province, northern Iraq, on Wednesday, according to a statement from Iraq’s Interior Ministry.

Ministry spokesperson Muqdad Miri confirmed the incident, stating: “At 10:00 a.m. local time, an intelligence unit from the 42nd Brigade of the 11th Division was ambushed during a reconnaissance mission in the Zgaytun Valley, within the Kirkuk Operations Command zone.”

The ambush claimed the lives of four soldiers and left three others with injuries of varying severity, Miri said, adding that reinforcements had been deployed to the area.

He also noted that the terrorist group had been surrounded, and a commission of inquiry was formed to investigate the incident.

Daesh had seized control of several Iraqi provinces, including Mosul, Salah al-Din, and Al Anbar, in June 2014. However, these areas were reclaimed in subsequent years, with former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declaring victory over the group on December 9, 2017.

Despite being defeated, Daesh continues to carry out attacks in rural parts of Iraq, particularly in provinces like Kirkuk.
