Warning for tourists: Hefty fines for picking endemic flower
Bolu has enforced strict penalties to protect its unique natural beauty.
Tourists and expatriates visiting Golcuk Nature Park and Abant Lake National Park should be aware that picking water lilies can result in a hefty fine of $11,870 (387,141 Turkish lira).
Golcuk and Abant attract visitors year-round. They come to see the stunning water lilies that bloom from spring through late autumn.
These flowers, in shades of yellow, white, and pink, create a breathtaking scene with their large green leaves floating on the water’s surface.
The Nature Conservation and National Parks Branch Directorate states, “These water lilies are under strict protection. Any harm caused to them is considered a serious offense under the Environmental Law.” The penalty for disrupting biological diversity is a fine of 387,141 Turkish lira.
Authorities in Bolu are diligent in protecting these plants. Officials report no fines issued so far this year, thanks to rigorous monitoring and visitor awareness campaigns. Park officials continuously educate visitors on the importance of preserving these natural wonders.
Tourists and nature lovers can enjoy the visual splendor of the water lilies, which offer excellent opportunities for photography and tranquil observation until November. However, they must remember to look but not touch. Protecting these flowers helps maintain the ecological balance and ensures that future visitors can also enjoy their beauty.
By following these guidelines, visitors can contribute to conservation efforts and avoid severe financial penalties. As the Nature Conservation and National Parks Branch Directorate emphasizes, “Protecting these flowers is essential for maintaining the natural balance and ensuring enjoyment of future visitors.”
Enjoy the beauty of Bolu’s parks responsibly and help preserve their unique flora for generations to come.
