In a bid to protect one of the Mediterranean’s rarest coastal flowers, the endangered sand lily (Pancratium maritimum) has been placed under protection in Gazipasa, a district of Antalya in southern Türkiye.

The lily, which grows naturally in sandy areas close to the sea, is an endemic species facing the threat of extinction due to human interference and habitat loss.

Steel fences and public awareness efforts

Gazipasa Municipality has launched a comprehensive initiative to safeguard these delicate plants. Teams from the municipality have identified areas along the coastline where the lilies thrive and have surrounded them with protective steel cages to prevent damage from foot traffic or unintentional harm.

Informational signs have also been installed to educate beachgoers and local residents about the ecological significance of the sand lily and to discourage any contact or destruction of the plant.

A natural and cultural treasure

Speaking about the project, Gazipasa Mayor Mehmet Ali Yilmaz emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship. “We consider protecting nature one of our most vital responsibilities,” he said. “The sand lily is not just a plant—it is part of our natural and cultural heritage.”

Yilmaz warned that careless interaction with the plant can lead to its disappearance, and stressed that the municipality is committed to both physical conservation measures and community education. “This is a beauty we can preserve together. Let’s protect the sand lilies as a community,” he added.

Heavy fines for uprooting the plant

Mayor Yilmaz also reminded the public that under national law, picking or uprooting sand lilies is strictly prohibited. Violators can face substantial administrative fines.

The sand lily, with its delicate white blooms and resilience to coastal winds, is considered one of the most iconic symbols of Mediterranean biodiversity. Efforts like Gazipasa’s offer a vital lifeline for the continued survival of this endangered flower.
