Though it may seem like a tiny strip on the world map, Panama makes a lasting impact with its strategic location, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty. Although it seems far from Türkiye, Panama stands out as both a paradise for tourism and an important center for international relations, thanks to its distinct advantages. The article explores Panama in all its aspects, inviting you on a journey to discover this wonderful country.

The first morning I woke up in this country, thanks to the invitation from Touch DMC, I experienced a kind of shock. Why? Even though I had done some research and watched some videos, I couldn’t imagine feeling this safe and enjoying myself so much in this country.

When my friend and I decided to get around on the beach around 6:00 a.m., we found ourselves amid a magnificent sunrise, feeling as if we were in Miami or Los Angeles. Yes, yes, this is Panama, but it seemed like it wasn’t! People strolling, jogging, or walking their dogs beside us—or perhaps we were with them—under this breathtaking sunrise. It felt as if all of Panama had gathered here. In just my first few hours, I felt like I had lived here for years. I hadn’t expected this country to be so refined.

Getting to know Panama

Panama, one of the richest countries in Central America, is one of the seven countries connecting North and South America, synonymous with the Panama Canal.

The name of the country has another beautiful meaning; in the native language, Panama means ‘countless butterflies’. Although it is close to South America on the map, geographically, it is in North America.

Panama-Türkiye relations: Strengthening ties

Relations between Türkiye and Panama have gained momentum in recent years. Direct flights by Turkish Airlines to the country have increased tourism and trade between the two countries. Increasing investments from Türkiye to Panama and cultural exchanges are also noteworthy. Additionally, the country offers visa-free travel for Turkish citizens, providing significant ease for both tourism and business connections.

Panama’s position in Tourism: Where nature and history intersect

The country holds a special place in world tourism with its tropical climate, stunning beaches, historic cities, and the famous Panama Canal. It offers a wide variety of options for both nature lovers and those interested in history and culture.

Cathedral Basilica Santa María la Antigua. Also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral, it is the most important catholic church in the country.

Places to visit:

  • Panama Canal: This canal, which is the heart of world trade, is seen as an engineering marvel. At the Miraflores Visitor Center, you can watch ships passing through the canal and learn about its history at the museum. The canal’s operation is like an elevator. A ship wanting to pass from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean advances through the canal’s step-by-step pools.
  • Casco Viejo (Old Town): The historic center of Panama City, with its colorful colonial buildings and vibrant nightlife, is enchanting.
  • Bocas del Toro: This archipelago on the Caribbean coast is a paradise with its turquoise waters, coral reefs, and white, sandy beaches.
  • San Blas Islands: These islands, where the Guna Yala natives live, are perfect for cultural exploration.

What to eat and drink?

Its cuisine is shaped by Caribbean and Latin American influences. Here are some flavors you should try:

  • Sancocho: A traditional soup made with chicken, vegetables and spices.
  • Ropa Vieja: shredded meat cooked in tomato sauce, served with rice.
  • Tamal de Maiz: A mixture of meat and vegetables wrapped in corn dough.
  • Seco: A type of rum made from sugar cane, often used in local cocktails.

Where to stay?

Of course, there are accommodation options for every budget, but for MICE events and especially incentive programs, hotels like the Bristol Hotel, W Hotel, and Waldorf Astoria stand out for their prime locations, walkable surroundings, and diverse selection of restaurants, cafes, and bars.

The country’s role in Latin America, migrant situation

It plays a key role in Latin America both in terms of trade and migrant mobility. It serves as a passage point for migrants from Central and South America and has become an attraction center because of its political and economic stability. However, this situation puts pressure on migrant policies and the local economy.

Economic, strategic power of Panama

Panama does not only stand out for its natural beauty but also for its economic and strategic importance. The Panama Canal, the country’s driving force, hosts 5% of global trade. Additionally, Panama’s free trade zones and financial sector make the country one of the economic centers of Latin America.

The uses the US dollar as its official currency, which provides stability to its economy while attracting foreign investors. For Turkish businesspeople, it offers opportunities, particularly in the logistics and tourism sectors.

Weather and climate

Panama has a tropical climate year-round. Temperatures generally range between 24 (75.2 degrees Fahrenheit) and 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). The dry season from November to April is the most ideal time for tourists.

The rainy season is from June to December, not ideal for a tropical vacation, but Panama has a different charm in every season, so I recommend planning your visit without regard to the time of year.

Panama and US Relations

Relations between Panama and the United States have deep historical ties, especially concerning the control of the Panama Canal, which has been one of the most significant agenda items between the two countries. Today, the U.S. is one of the country’s largest trading partners.

The country is not just a tourism destination but also a country full of opportunities in cultural and economic terms. As the ties between Türkiye and the touristic country strengthen each day, this seemingly distant country is actually much closer than we think. Whether you’re looking for a paradise to discover or a new market for business, it should definitely be on your radar.
