Mounted police charm tourists in Istanbul’s iconic spots
Mounted police officers stationed in popular tourist areas of Istanbul, including Taksim Square, Istiklal Avenue, the Blue Mosque, and the Uskudar coastline, have become a major attraction.
Both local and foreign tourists are eager to take photos with the officers, often forming long queues.
Unique blend of tradition and modern policing
Operating under the Istanbul Police Department’s Riot Control Branch, the Mounted Police Group Command not only handles public events, official ceremonies, and inspections of forested and recreational areas but also patrols coastal, park, and tourist zones. The unit, established in 2018, comprises 27 officers, eight of whom are women.
Mounted police officers are selected based on their physical abilities, equestrian experience, and health status. After completing a rigorous four-month basic riding course, they begin their duties, ensuring peace and safety in both Istanbul and six other cities across Türkiye.
Playing a vital role in preventing forest fires
During the summer months, mounted units play a critical role in preventing forest fires. They patrol areas inaccessible to vehicles, helping to reduce the risk of fires. The horses are meticulously cared for by the unit’s personnel.
Seyit Ahmet Dikici, Group Commander of the Mounted Police, expressed his satisfaction with the public’s positive response. “Horses hold a special place in our culture, and this endears them to the public. We are pleased with the interest shown by our citizens. We work around the clock, seven days a week, to ensure their safety,” he stated.
Carrying on the equestrian tradition
One of the female riders, Gokce Hatun Saglam, shared her pride in continuing the equestrian tradition. “I’ve been serving as a mounted police officer for about a year now. I love horses, and when I saw this unit in Istanbul, I knew I had to join. It’s incredibly fulfilling, especially as a woman, to keep this tradition alive,” she said. The positive feedback from the public only strengthens her dedication to her role.
Emre Kocan, another officer, mentioned his background in equestrian sports. “I’ve been a police officer for three years and a mounted officer for two. I grew up around horses and knew I had to join this unit. We frequently patrol parks, stadiums, and other public spaces, where children, in particular, are fascinated by the horses. Seeing their joy makes us all very happy,” he remarked.
Mounted police: Memorable experience for visitors
The presence of mounted police officers in tourist hotspots like Taksim Square and the Blue Mosque draws significant attention. Many visitors, like Havva Dagtekin, who recently encountered the officers on Istiklal Avenue, are eager to capture the moment. “It caught my eye immediately. I think it’s a great initiative, and it’s a fantastic photo opportunity for tourists. I couldn’t resist taking a picture and petting the horses,” she shared.
Similarly, Emrah Tuna, a visitor from Mersin, praised the initiative and hoped to see it continue.
The mounted police are not only upholding public safety but also adding to the unique charm of Istanbul’s bustling tourist areas.
