How to protect your pet during an earthquake

The 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the Marmara Sea on April 23 reignited fears about the long-anticipated major earthquake in the region. For pet owners, especially those living with cats and dogs, an important question arose: how to keep their beloved companions safe during such a disaster.
Serhat Demirel from Hurriyet outlined crucial steps for those caught in an earthquake with their pets.

Essential precautions before an earthquake
Experts stress the importance of preparation to ensure the safety of pets during emergencies. Key measures include:
- Microchipping: To quickly locate your pet if they get lost during a quake, microchipping is essential.
- Identification Tag: Attach a tag to your pet’s collar with their name and your phone number clearly written.
- Emergency Kit: Prepare an earthquake kit for your pet, including a first-aid set, bandages, vaccination records, enough food and water for a few days, and a blanket.
- Emergency Contact: Designate someone who can check on your pet if an earthquake strikes while you are away from home.
What to do during earthquake
During an earthquake, it is critical to prioritize your own safety. Experts emphasize that cats and dogs, like humans, have strong self-preservation instincts. They will instinctively seek out safe spaces. If you attempt to chase and grab them, both of you may end up in danger.

Instead, focus on securing yourself first. If your pet is nearby and calm, you can keep them close without putting yourself at risk.
If you are outdoors when the earthquake hits
If you are outside with your dog during an earthquake, keep the leash tight and hold your dog close. Shield yourself and your pet by curling around them if necessary.
Should your dog panic and break free, experts advise against chasing after them. They will likely find a safe place to hide and, once the danger passes, they usually return to their owners when the environment calms down.
